Three years later, the company released its dedicated Windows compatible version. The Visio 4.0 whose structure was designed to meet the standards of Windows 95 was released and made path for another advantage for the company. Microsoft was able to acquire Visio Corporation through a stocks swap. Today, the continued development of the application is done as a separate entity within Microsoft. It is assigned as a new division whose main purpose is to enhance the development of the application under the name Microsoft Office Visio.

There are too few applications that can open VSD files. The native application, Microsoft Office Visio has the capability of opening and editing these files. On the other hand, the company has released a viewer version that can be integrated on Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher version. The vviewer.exe does the read-only function through a web browser allowing computer users to view and print VSD files without the need of installing the whole Microsoft Office Visio package. The viewer can be downloaded through the maker's website for free.
