File extension VSD is the byproduct of the Visio application provided by Microsoft. A Visio file can contain basic to complex diagrams and data access essential for business implementations. Later versions of the application are capable of connecting to several types of data sources and present information through the applications interface. The application is also capable of creating network designs and implementation for centralized solutions including the Visio Network Center where users can find documentations of the latest network documentations from other Visio users.
Originally the application was develop by Seattle, Washington based software maker, Visio Corporation until it was acquired by Microsoft in June 2000. During their early years of development, the company was named Axon Corporation and eventually in 1992, the same year the first Visio application was released, the company used the name Shapeware as its official trademark.
Three years later, the company released its dedicated Windows compatible version. The Visio 4.0 whose structure was designed to meet the standards of Windows 95 was released and made path for another advantage for the company. Microsoft was able to acquire Visio Corporation through a stocks swap. Today, the continued development of the application is done as a separate entity within Microsoft. It is assigned as a new division whose main purpose is to enhance the development of the application under the name Microsoft Office Visio.
There are too few applications that can open VSD files. The native application, Microsoft Office Visio has the capability of opening and editing these files. On the other hand, the company has released a viewer version that can be integrated on Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher version. The vviewer.exe does the read-only function through a web browser allowing computer users to view and print VSD files without the need of installing the whole Microsoft Office Visio package. The viewer can be downloaded through the maker's website for free.
